Confirmation of the disciples’ calling
On the shores of the Sea of Galilee, around March 31, Jesus confirms the call of four fishermen: Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John. Unlike the first call at Bethany, he now invites them to leave everything behind and devote themselves exclusively to evangelism. Their immediate and total response reflects a trust built up over the months spent at his side. Matthew (4:18-22) and Mark (1:16-20) report this foundational episode of the Galilean ministry.
Mark 1.16-20 (King James Version) :Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets. And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.King James Version (1769), domaine public — texte : eBible.org

The men who want to follow the Messiah Jesus
Luke 9.57-62 presents three men who wish to follow the Messiah Jesus, each with a condition or a hesitation. Jesus responds by calling for renunciation of material comfort, for the primacy of the Kingdom over family duties, and for a determination with no turning back. This passage, unique to Luke, takes place during the journey through Samaria toward Jerusalem and is a radical call to total, uncompromising commitment to the Messiah.
1 Kings 19.19-21 (King James Version) :So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.NoteGo…: Heb. Go returnAnd he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee? And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.King James Version (1769), domaine public — texte : eBible.org -

The demanding consecration of the disciple
The pericope 238 reports a teaching unique to Luke (14.25-27) on the demands of discipleship. On the road to Bethany, after December 4, 32, the Messiah Jesus addresses a great crowd: following the Messiah means giving him absolute priority over every human relationship ('hate' in the Semitic sense) and agreeing to carry one's cross, that is, to embrace suffering and rejection in order to remain faithful. A total commitment, without compromise.
